What is Techpreneur of the Year all about?
Techpreneur of the year to begin with, is a category under the FOYA Awards. The award is for founders in the technology space. The award is guided on the principle of promoting, recognizing and appreciating young founders developing the nation while creating jobs through entrepreneurship and to motivate others to start businesses for economic sustainability.
Well, Techpreneurship generally is the business carried through technology. It is the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production of goods or services. Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, and the like, or it can be embedded in machines which can be operated without detailed knowledge of their workings.
Within the technology industry, “techpreneur” is a term used to refer to an entrepreneur who starts and manages their own technology business. Such businesses may range from; manufacture and repair of electronics, sales and servicing of IT equipment, a telecommunication company, a cyber café, web designers, graphic designers, bloggers, T-shirt printing, business cards generation, engraving of items, software development, machine repairing among others.
A paradigm shift is ongoing in Kenya. New innovations are destroying old ways of doing things especially business, and smart young startup entrepreneurs are at the forefront of this quiet but historic transformation. Teams of skilled developers and programmers have sprung up in innovation hubs, incubators and accelerators across the country to build information and provide telecom solutions that capitalize on the country’s mix of challenges and opportunities.
Today, business operations are characterized by transacting via Mpesa, communicating through Skype with colleagues in different continents, using Twitter to track global trends, managing multiple email and bank accounts from smartphones, creating communities and getting instant consumer feedback on Facebook, networking with fellow professionals on LinkedIn, sharing photos, music and stories on You tube, Sound cloud and WhatsApp, launching brands on Instagram, getting breaking updates from news apps, selecting, ordering meals and trading goods online, among many more. These are some of the tremendous technological changes that are underway in Kenya.
